Making my own stainless rings, what size mandrel should I use?(USA)

I'm planning on making my own 14g and 16g stainless steel rings. What would be a good size mandrel to wrap my coils with? I'm hoping to end up with a couple different AR rings for different jewelry weaves. I think I can get a few different sizes of steel round rod from the hardware store.
