What varnish or sealant to use for gouache painted clay?

I was dumb and thought that Varathane 'water based' wood finish would help seal it. (My reading/understanding comprehension is so bad) So when I used it, it took smudged all the colors. Im in a strict deadline sadly so anything I can buy on michaels, walmart or art stores on what varnish would be suitable for painted gouache? Or sealant do that I can seal it and dip it on the polyutherane again.
