Can you upgrade RAM on the newest iMac?

I can't find that answers and teh apple stores tell you that no you can't. So if you buy a new iMac with 16GB ram, you can't upgrade it to 32 (but you could upgrade the one from 5 years ago to 32!!) If you buy a new iMac with 32 GB ram, you can't upgrade it to 48 GB ram, and so on. Is that true??
