CLOSED 10 YEARS AGO TODAY: 1950s Sears Department Store in Laurelwood at Poplar Avenue in Memphis Tennessee (May 7 1958 - April 10 2016)

Today marks exactly 10 years since this beautiful 1950s Sears department store shut its doors. The Hillsdale Sears that originally opened on September 12th of 1962 as an Emporium department store that was later occupied by Sears in 1996 also closed its doors by that same day: [https://flickr.com/photos/voycall/albums/72177720319839307/](https://flickr.com/photos/voycall/albums/72177720319839307/) ...

ISO white mini-dress for post elopement dinner

Just looking for a starting point or online shop that y'all would recommend- Seeking a white mini dress that reads somewhat bridal (but not over-the-top) for a small micro-reception dinner at a nice restaurant. Not sure yet exactly what style that I want but I'd love something shorter but still suitable for the occasion, as my legs are my better feature lol. Budget - ideally under $200 but som...

Looking for molded cups/lined cups similar to Freya Fascinate and Panache Envy

I really like the fit of both Freya Fascinate and Panache Envy and need some balconette-style bras that I can wear with lower cut tops but I hate the feeling of the loose (edit: meaning unstructured) mesh cups. I prefer a little more structure or at least more solid/softer lining. From what I can tell, neither bra comes in a different material, but wondering if there are similar ones I should t...

Thrift Store Find - Rag & Bone rough out boots. $25

Was going to look right past these as my thrift stores usually only have cheap department store leather, and little in my size. But I saw the Goodyear welt and the Made in USA tags and looked closer. Almost no sole wear, light burnishing from cuffs at the heel. A couple lightly fraying threads. Quick googling showed similar boots by them go for $200-$400 new. I thought the size 11 would be too sm...

I browsed hundreds of diving catalogs from 1954-64

For those interested in the history of early dive watches (1954-64), here are a few of my impressions from the landscape of diving publications like AMF, Aqualung, Barakuda, Healthways, La Spirotechnique, Nemrod, Scubapro, U.S. Divers, and many others. Catalogs are merely one point source to begin an understanding, but an important one. * Catalogs fall into roughly three types: 1) Rebreather (scu...

Do you have an interesting story about the PROCESS of buying a fountain pen?

I 1998 I traveled from the USA to Japan on a business trip.  I desired a Namiki Vanishing Point pen and thought that buying it in Japan would be fun. I was in Nagano during the Winter Olympics and visited a tiny pen shop.  I spoke no Japanese, and the solitary clerk spoke no English.  However, I hoped that the glass display counters would allow me to point out my desired pen.  Unfortunately...

Shoe arrived from Amazon with extremely sharp nail inside (CA, USA)

Location: California I ordered several different pairs of ankle boots and knee high boots on Amazon from a well known brand. Over the last few years, I’ve purchased a few other pairs of shoes from this brand at department stores and thought the quality was pretty good. The shoes are not cheap - $150-350 per pair. Almost every pair from this order had significant quality issues but most of t...

Like Hunting? Well... soon that will be a thing of the past.

# The Issue #1 Your Hunting Ground is Up for Sale If you’re a guy who lives for opening day, who trusts his boots more than a boardroom, or who just wants to take his kids camping without seeing a "Private Property" sign every ten feet, you need to look at the fine print of Project 2025 which was pushed through by republicans last year. **The Patriot’s Perspective:** Since the days...

Help Needed to Identify the History Behind this Bike.

My only guess is that it was some sort of High End department store bike from the mid 90s. Internet searches revealed nothing, but it appears to be a high-quality aluminum bike. The serial number is stamped **3D0027 USA**, and there appears to be a faded “Made in USA” sticker on the seat tube. The components were mostly Shimano M737, with the exception of the XT thumb shifters. Sorry, I for...

Blackout Zone Five

Honestly when I mention this to people, no one else seems to remember this. I’m not sure why this seems to linger in my mind every night. When I mention the riots in 95 they talk about the riots in LA. They don’t remember the sirens screaming all night. They don’t remember the men in gas masks knocking on every door, telling us to leave. The shortages, the fear, the paranoia, the evacuation...
