I happened to find two tins at a dollar general and was told I could not buy them because they were “for somebody else”. I do not like to cause trouble so I just accepted this and went on my way but it bugged me. Is this common at dollar stores?

I've lived in multiple states across the east coast and midwest. I've made a lot of long drives and make a point to blindly stop in different towns for food and hotels just to get the lay of the land. This is a bit of an overstatement but its to the point where most places in the US barely even have their own "culture" or "vibe". The US is basically just one big Buc-ee's.
